Selfie City

The project is based on a wide, sophisticated analysis of tens of thousands of selfies originating from 5 different world cities (New York, Sao Paulo, Berlin, Bangkok, Moscow), with statistical data derived from both automatic image analysis and crowd-sourced human judgements (i.e. Amazon Mechanical Turk). Its analysis process and its main findings are presented through various interactive data visualizations, such as via image plots, bar graphs, an interactive dashboard and other data graphics.

Google Labs Music Timeline

The Music Timeline shows genres of music waxing and waning, based on how many Google Play Music users have an artist or album in their music library, and other data (such as album release dates). Each stripe on the graph represents a genre; the thickness of the stripe tells you roughly the popularity of music released in a given year in that genre. (For example, the "jazz" stripe is thick in the 1950s since many users' libraries contain jazz albums released in the '50s.) Click on the stripes to zoom into more specialized genres.

IMMERSION

Immersion [mit.edu] is a quite revealing visualization tool of which the NSA - or your own national security agency - can only be jealous of... Developed by MIT students Daniel SmilkovDeepak Jagdish and Cèsar Hidalgo, Immersion generates a time-varying network visualization of all your email contacts, based on how you historically communicated with them.

Immersion is able to aggregate and analyze the "From", "To", "Cc" and "Timestamp" data of all the messages in any (authorized) Gmail, MS Exchange or Yahoo email account. It then filters out the 'collaborators' - people from whom one has received, and sent, at least 3 email messages from, and to.
